Update December – Giunte AUIC, ICAT, 3I & Design

Good morning everyone!
We want to propose today a report of the councils held from June to December 2017 for the schools of Design and 3I and finally of December 2017 for theAUIC.

3I School Juntas

June 2017

The Didactic Council has proposed to extend the use of the "Turnitin" Anti-Plagiarism Software, already used by the Doctoral School, also to Master's Degrees.

It must be the graduating student to submit his paper on the recommendation and request of the supervisor. The latter has no right to carry out checks without the consent of the graduate. The process will remain restricted only to the graduating student and his supervisor, not involving the Graduation Commission.

The expected cost is about 40000 € for the passage of 15000 theses.

July 2017

2 new Internal Double Degree programs have been proposed:

  1. Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering with the ICAT school related to infrastructure and transport design;
  2. Mechanical Engineering – Building and Architectural Engineering with the AUIC school, will take place entirely at the Lecco headquarters, linked to the automation of construction processes.

The programs were presented, within which there will be little possibility of inserting courses of your choice due to the high specialization of the paths themselves.

October 2017

The Dean informs that a well of courses is being organized from which to draw 5/6 credits for the CCS that will require it, concerning:

  1. Ethics for innovation
  2. Communication and argumentation
  3. Sustainable development
  4. Public and private law in the global market
  5. Personality, teambuilding, leadership
  6. Technology forecasting

These teachings could be included in the Manifestos as mandatory (defined as "action 1" or as further additions under "action 2").

November 2017

The Electrical Engineering course will activate an LM path in "Railway Engineering".

December 2017

In the last junta, a day was established to collect all the changes that the CCS intend to include in the study manifesto.

A new "honours programme on research in information engineering" will also be established and will be divided into the parts of research activities and courses on soft skills, flanked by several seminars.

All this aims to provide the student with an in-depth knowledge on how to do research and also how to present their work and therefore their thesis.

For this reason, students will be able to access it from the second semester of the first year or to the first semester of the second year.

The CCS concerned are:

  1. automation and control engineering
  2. biomedical engineering
  3. computer science and engineering
  4. electrical engineering
  5. electronics engineering
  6. telecommunication engineering

It will consist of 14 credits so that the student does not go to pay additional fees.

AUIC Council

DECEMBER 2017

The session of the AUIC School Board opened with the presentation by Prof. Orsini, to the commission and to the technical body of the school secretariats, of the Project. Specifically, the areas concerning the Architecture campus were illustrated.

First of all, the project proposes with priority student spaces and secretarial spaces with a new organization of building 11.

The functional reorganization proposes to the Patio Plan the development of collective activities / student spaces in connection with the Renzo Piano project; the Street Plan, through the redevelopment of the Rogers Hall and the new layout of the exhibition spaces, which represent the identifying character of the school, acts as a contact with the city; the mezzanine floor will host, instead, the secretarial space with waiting room and student desks, in accordance with the requests of the technical body present; the upper floor will host a large agora with study spaces for students with 400 workstations. The project illustrated is in the preliminary phase and it is assumed that construction will start in the summer of 2018 with a duration of 4 months.

Always through the project VI.VI. POLIMI, rules have been proposed that will be applied in the study spaces according to the type of study envisaged, defining different spaces according to the needs necessary for the type of study, such as individual study, group work or flexible study. This implies that some classrooms will be predisposed to silence or the possibility of communicating in groups.

Another interesting topic discussed is the need for active communication of the School with the teaching staff and students, in light of the lack of awareness of Teaching Practice.

In closing, the Student Representation proposed a modification and simplification of the administrative procedure for managing student requests through the creation of a School FAQ system, and communication on the allocation procedures in the laboratories.

June-December Design School

In this first semester of the academic year 2017/18 the most discussed topic was innovative teaching. The School already boasts a considerable advantage in this regard, being already very present innovative teaching methods such as "flipped classrooms".

The latest initiative is "Design Explorer", a major stimulus to tour and discover exhibitions, events about the world of art and design.

From the email sent to all students on December 19th it is possible to download the "Designer's Passport" which must be printed and used as a travel diary to fix us on tickets, brochures, selfies and everything that is necessary to tell your participation.

Students can access the schedule on the school's website(http://www.design.polimi.it/design-explorer)and choose the recognized activities: each activity corresponds to a score that, added to the others, will guarantee 3 extra credits upon reaching a score greater than or equal to 100. Students can also propose new events not on the list through an email to the representatives(andreagiulia.pusineri@mail.polimi.it, federico.nunziata@mail.polimi.it).

Another novelty is the addition of a portfolio at the time of graduation.

The degree paper, which may consist of a poster, model, prototype or any high output communicated during the Synthesis Laboratory course and which can continue to be a group, will then be supported at the time of graduation, after the PEL and the consequent deepening of the project agreed with the supervisor, by a strictly personal portfolio in which the student will show all his experiences (academic or work) useful to show the maturity reached at the end of the three-year period. For the moment portfolio lessons have been included in the final synthesis course, but tomorrow it could become a course in itself.

ICAT School Joint

In these months of representation as vice-president of the joint commission of the ICAT school I had the opportunity to actively participate in the drafting of the report on the A.A. 2016/17 together with the other representatives. After several meetings with the professors and with the evaluation unit of the university we decided to make some changes to the old report by adding other useful data to better understand the performance of the students in the different CDS in order to draw the most appropriate conclusions.

As far as the students are concerned, since the new academic calendar came into force and having brought several problems about the appeals, we found ourselves having to contact Mr. Castiglioni and we have changed, where possible, the dates of the appeals that were in overlap of others or even the dates of the appeals that, being preparatory and priority, prevented the development of the first available appeal of other teachings.

We already have other proposals/improvements for 2018 that we will bring to the attention of the committee.

In conclusion, on behalf of the whole association, we would like to wish you a happy Christmas holiday (we also shake our fingers for your February session).
